REMEMBERING GREAT SP0RTS MOMENTS
Radio and TV personality and all around sports fan Gary Java spoke to Club members and guests about his nearly 30-yr career in sports broadcasting. Gary, who is play-by-play broadcaster for the Creighton University Bluejays, moved to Omaha from Oswego, NY. Gary said he is very blessed to be in front of a microphone doing what he likes as long as he has. While he was not broadcasting there, Gary noted his foremost great sports moment was when the USA hockey team beat the USSR team in the 1980 Olympics at Lake Placid, NY. He was traveling to Lake Placid on the way to see the gold medal game, listening to the USA-USSR game on the radio. Horns were blaring across the countryside at the end of the game, Gary said, and a most memorable moment was the playing of the National Anthem at the medal ceremony. Gary also broadcast UNL Husker football during some of their championship games. Of particular note was the 1971 "Game of the Century" for the national championship. Gary stated he has witnessed many examples of individual greatness in sports and has met some very nice people along the way.
